What is so important about the World Design Capital designation is that it is about cities, and about what makes cities great. Great cities represent the best of who we are. Dublin’s bid for WDC was short listed to the final three out of 56 cities with the 2014 designation awarded to Cape Town. As a result, Dublin is now one of a network of World Design Capital international cities who can collaborate and share innovative design programmes and strategies.
The City of Taipei hosts World Design Capital 2016. “Adaptive City – Design in Motion” is Taipei City’s core appeal. They are addressing how they can apply innovative “design thinking” to overcome the constraints that limited resources place on Taipei’s development, to pursue continual renewal and change in their urban governance, to create happiness in the lives of their citizens, to bring citizens a better quality of life in a liveable city, and to create a forward-looking city with design vision.
For WDC 2016, Taipei has invited 10 iconic Taiwanese designers from different fields, including graphic design, branding, product design, architecture, and public art, to act as WDC Taipei 2016 Design Ambassadors.
Dublin City Architect Ali Grehan was selected by the City of Taipei to be a member of World Design Capital® (WDC) 2016 International Advisory Committee. The advisory committee, comprised of a highly respected group of seven internationally recognised experts in the field of design, include Shikuan Chen (Taipei), Ali Grehan (Dublin), Arthur Huang (Taipei), Wei-Gong Liou (Taipei), Bulelwa Makalima-Ngewana (Cape Town), Manfred Wang (Taipei) and Dilki de Silva, Icsid Secretary General (Montreal), who will directly contribute to the year-long programme of events that will take place in Taipei (Taiwan, Chinese Taipei) from January to December 2016.
The WDC Taipei 2016 International Advisory Committee will lend their knowledge and expertise to the benefit of the implementation company in Taipei as it develops the WDC Taipei 2016 programme. Members of the WDC 2016 IAC will also play an ambassadorial role internationally, by activating their own networks and encourage international engagement.
Ali Grehan and PIVOT Dublin look forward to working with World Design Capital 2016 as an advisory committee member and with future design projects.
